Are sober living homes profitable, and what does it really take to operate one successfully?
In this video, Scott and Rebecca Steenbergh explain how they went from experimenting with a family vacation rental to building a real estate portfolio that includes multiple sober living homes.
Scott spent more than a decade working in the substance-use field and repeatedly saw people leave treatment without a safe, supportive place to continue their recovery. Many of the available homes in their area were outdated or poorly maintained.
That gave Scott and Rebecca an idea:
Could they provide better housing, create meaningful impact, and build a profitable real estate business at the same time?
They began purchasing larger single-family properties with the bedroom count, bathrooms, shared space, and renovation potential needed for a sober living model. They then built relationships with treatment centers, established resident screening and house-management systems, and created homes designed to support people during early recovery.
In this conversation, you’ll learn:
• How sober living homes work
• What types of properties make the most sense
• How residents are referred and screened
• How house managers help reduce the workload
• What insurance, liability, and zoning issues investors need to consider
• How this model can create both cash flow and meaningful impact
• What Scott and Rebecca learned while building their first three homes
Scott and Rebecca also share what they would do differently, how they manage residents, and why strong systems are essential before trying to scale.
